AFL Sydney Team of the Week - Round Five

Round Five of the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division gave us a better look at the clubs who make up the top three spots on the ladder – with Manly Warringah, East Coast and Inner West all registering strong wins. While Sydney University and the Southern Power both suffered just their second losses of the season – with both coming against the ladder-leaders.

Inner West remains equal second on the ladder following their 11.9 (75) to 4.3 (27) win over UTS, while Macquarie University’s winless streak continues following a 2.5 (17) to 6.7 (43) loss to Pennant Hills.

A clear contrast from Macquarie University’s situation is Manly Warringah’s, as they continued their winning streak with a 6.4 (40) to 2.4 (16) win over Sydney University. Following just one win behind Manly is the East Coast Eagles who extended their winning streak following a hard-fought 6.9 (45) to 4.2 (26) win over the Southern Power.

Round Five also saw North Shore register their second win of 2020 in style, with a 14.5 (89) to 1.4 (10) belting of UNSW.

Scroll down to see our Round 5 Team of the Week, plus a small breakdown of the squad.

Captain: Nicola Barr

Vice-Captain: Georgina Fowler

The four big winners of Round Five have been reflected in our Team of the Week, with both Inner West and North Shore holding the most spots in the side with four, while East Coast and Manly Warringah sit with three named players each.

As for this week’s leaders, the Captaincy goes to Nicola Barr following her Best on Ground performance for North Shore in which she booted two goals. We have also selected the East Coast Eagles second Best on Ground to be our Vice-Captain, which is none other than Georgina Fowler.

Fittingly, this week’s Captain and Vice-Captain both find themselves on our half forward line. The remaining spots in our offense go to Pennant Hills Best on Ground, Madison Hare, and Inner West’s Gillian Behan who booted two goals for the Magpies, as well as East Coast’s Brenna Tarrant who booted three goals during the Eagles’ win.

Across the midfield is Inner West’s Best on Ground, Ella Heads, as well as Samantha Goldrick who was named as the Best on Ground for UTS on the weekend. Also named in the midfield is another North Shore player in Dominique Carruthers while the followers for this week include Southern Power’s Best on Ground, Natalie Smith, Pennant Hills’ Charlotte Owen, and Sydney University’s Best on Ground, Mikaela Mahony.

East Coast Eagles’ Best on Ground, Bryany Parker is named at half back alongside Ashleigh Carter from Manly Warringah. Rounding out our defence for this week is Inner West’s Erin Todd, as well as Macquarie University’s Best on Ground, Laure Coleman, and UNSW’s Best on Ground, Gabrielle Wendelin.

Calling this week’s interchange home is Melissa Lindsay who booted two goals for UTS, as well as Manly’s Best on Ground, Alyssa Wilson. Also named on our interchange is Brooke Mcguire from the Southern Power, and Caelah Stanley from North Shore. The final three spots in our Round Five Team of the Week belong to Jasmine Smith from Inner West, Kara Wall from Manly Warringah, and Kate Reynolds from North Shore.
