AFL Sydney Team of the Week - Round One

Football is beginning to make its return around the nation. The weekend just gone saw the AFL Sydney Women’s competition kick off their 2020 season – and of course, we are here to bring to you the round’s best performers.

The closest match we got on the weekend was the Pennant Hills and Sydney University clash, in which Sydney Uni came out on top by 14 points. At the other end of the scale, we had the Magpies and Power both get up by at least seven goals.

As with our other Team of the Weeks, the positions are based purely on that players performance during that round – so no previous accolades are taken into consideration.

Scroll down to see this week’s team, plus a small breakdown of the squad.

Captain: Erin McKinnon Vice-Captain: Georgia Garnett

This round’s Team of the Week saw a very even number of players represented across the ten clubs, with each team having at least one player named. Due to their mammoth win, the Southern Power hold the greatest number of spots in the side with four.

As for this week’s leaders, we have selected the Wolves’ best on ground from their big win, Erin McKinnon, as the Captain. The Vice-Captaincy goes to the East Coast Eagle’s best on ground during their loss, Georgia Garnett.

This round’s potent forward line is made up of players from five individual clubs, with Power’s Laure Holdsworth, Sydney Uni’s Lucy Gilfedder and North Shore’s Hayley Fell, all combining for a total of ten goals on the weekend. Joining them at half forward, is East Coast Eagle Brenna Tarrant, as well as Lisa Steane from the Wolves.

Another East Coast Eagle finds herself as a follower in our team, with Ally Dallaway named on ball. Rounding out the followers is this week’s Captain, Erin McKinnon, and her teammate, Emily Goodsir.

Calling this week’s midfield home is Emily Eaves from the Southern Power, as well as Lael Kassem from the Magpies, and Elizabeth Gordon from the Demons.

Macquarie University’s Ellie Hicks, and Tait Mackrill from the Bats, are both named at halfback. Rounding out this week’s defense is this week’s Vice-Captain, Georgia Garnett, as well as North Shore’s Caelah Stanley, and Inner West’s Erin Todd.

The rest of this week’s spots include a Southern Power duo of Jessica Whelan and Kiara Beesley. Joining them is a duo of Sydney University players in Esther Maling and Mikaela Mahony. The final three spots go to Amanda Amberg from the Bats, as well as Madison Hare from the Demons, and finally, Senna Gulden from the Bulldogs.
