GSFLW Season Spotlight - Goolwa
The Magpies were on the cusp of earning a finals berth during 2020, can they break into the top four this season?
Finished - Fifth
Record - Three wins and four losses (minor round)
MWM GSFLW Team of the Year - Renee Moon, Asha Bell
The Magpies suffered back to back losses to finish the 2020 season, the two losses that ultimately cost them a finals berth--yet there are plenty of positives to take.
Goolwa were a wildcard side during 2020, no one was quite sure of where they were going to finish up. The black and white, who were well supplied by the 2020 GSFLW Best and Fairest Renee Moon, enjoyed some big wins last season.
The Magpies were no match for McLaren, but they easily brushed side the bottom sides and came within just a couple of goals of Strathalbyn, Mt Compass, and Willunga--meaning that they certainly were a middle placed side.
There has been a few list changes, the most notable being Renee Moon who earnt a spot on South Adelaide's SANFLW list where she started off great but unfortunately has since been injured. But they have proved they are still competitive as they defeated Yankalilla in the KI Game during Round One--so only time will tell as to how well the Magpies will go this season.
What Head Coach Jason Ramsey has to Say:
How is the side looking for the new season?
"Side is looking good. the improvement over summer has been broad. We have had consistent numbers at trainings. The girls are just itching to get out and play now."
What would you say is going to be the biggest challenge of 2021?
"For us to play finals this season we will have to compete hard against the seasoned top four sides in the competition. Being McLaren, Compass, Strath and Willunga. Not discounting the other teams but these 4 teams are proven."
What are you looking to build on from the previous season?
"Scoreboard pressure has always eluded us. We have shown we are competitive enough at the contest but just need to finish our work."
Which players have impressed you the most during preseason?
"Hard to single out players but our Captain Rachel Searle has been one out of the box. Rachel competed in the short version triathlon couple weeks back and did very well."
"Amber McKinlay who is a first year player and has been ear marked to follow the foot steps of Renee Moon who is up at South Adelaide doing well."
Player wise, who do you think will be the major improvers of 2021?
"The whole group has found that extra 5-10% improvement but throwing names I would say Tess Fraser, Asha and Lacey Bell and hopefully Megan Hoad who has moved up forward."
Which new players to the side do you think are worth keeping an eye on?
"Amber Mckinlay, Kate Whiting, Emma Cooney."
What are you looking forward to the most this season?
"Watching the improvement of women's footy in the GSFL. We have seen on the TV the difference 12 months makes. Love to make a finals appearance that would great reward for the girls effort over pre season."
