GSFLW Season Spotlight - Mt Compass
The Bulldogs have been pushing to make the Big Dance for the last few seasons, only to slip up in the finals. But has their time finally come to contest the Grand Final?
Finished - Fourth
Record - Five wins and two losses (minor round)
MWM GSFLW Team of the Year - Demi Sharp, Linda Shute, Taylah Eastwood
When looking at the competition's powerhouses, McLaren, Strathalbyn and more recently Willunga, have been the standouts since the league's inception. Yet Mt Compass have always been following close behind.
Losing to some of the earlier mentioned sides during the tail end of the season, Mt Compass still booked themselves into the 2020 Finals Series, and while they didn't go as far as what they would have liked--their U16s certainly did.
Proving that they have some of the best young talent in the competition, spearheaded by Brooke Boileau and Kiahni Russell, the Bulldogs are shaping up to have a genuine dash towards this year's Grand Final.
What Head Coach Simon Robinson has to Say:
How is the side looking for the new season?
"The side is looking very promising for season 2021. We lost a few to retirement and pregnancy, but we have a few back, so its balanced out the numbers. We also have a few new recruits that will boost our stocks, so overall numbers are strong."
What would you say is going to be the biggest challenge of 2021?
"The biggest challenge, whether its men or women’s footy is always managing injuries, getting through those cold winter nights at training, improving the skills at training and working on the game day teamwork."
What are you looking to build on from the previous season?
"The last three years have seen us fall at the Preliminary final. We want to go further this season."
Which players have impressed you the most during preseason?
"We had a group attend skill sessions in the lead up to pre-season through November/December. Massive improvement from that group with their kicking, marking and handballing. Don’t want to give too much away, but I’m very impressed with the new players to our club. They may well be the difference come finals."
Player wise, who do you think will be the major improvers of 2021?
"I think we will see improvement across the board. These girls are improving so much year on year! If I had to put names to paper I would keep an eye on, Caroline Scott, Kelly Ryan, Amy Taylor, Tyler Garrett, Brook Boileau, Kiahni Russell and Taylor McKinnon."
Which new players to the side do you think are worth keeping an eye on?
"Georgie Thomas, Tyler Garrett, Taylor McKinnon, Morgan Daglish and Heidi Smith."
What are you looking forward to the most this season?
