GSFLW Season Spotlight - Victor Harbor
Can the Kangaroos rise off of the bottom of the ladder during the 2021 season?
Finished - Eight
Record - Zero wins and seven losses (minor round)
MWM GSFLW Team of the Year - Jaimee Millard
2020 was a tough year in general, yet it especially stung for Victor Harbor as they found themselves at the bottom of the ladder after going winless for the season.
Round Seven was the Battle for the Wooden Spoon, in which the Kangaroos fell four goals shy of Yankalilla to finish bottom--making it a rough ending to a rough season. In total, Victor Harbor scored 51 points from their seven matches but conceded 569. In fact there was only one game in which the opposition didn't score more against them then their season total, which was the Tigers score of 30 during Round Seven.
Yet it isn't all doom and gloom for the Kangaroos as the side does boast some promising young players in Jaimee Millard and Maya Overall.
Struggling for numbers, Round One this season showed that they won't be a top end contender, as Strathalbyn defeated them 130 to 0. Yet they may be able to put in place the building blocks to become more competitive during the seasons ahead.
What Head Coach Patrick Sroka has to Say:
How is the side looking for the new season?
"The side is looking refreshed and excited for all the challenges that 2021 has to offer, there has been some great skill development as well as an increased focus on fitness and some handy new inclusions."
What would you say is going to be the biggest challenge of 2021?
"I would say the biggest challenge of 2021 will be trying to consistently implement our game style for four quarters along with continuing to build numbers."
What are you looking to build on from the previous season?
"One of the main areas we have looked to improve upon has been decision making and playing smart footy. Another aspect that we are looking to improve is the continuity and culture of the team and the way we do things as a cohesive unit."
Which players have impressed you the most during preseason?
"There has been major improvement from several players both in all three grades, the will and desire from a few of the girls has been fantastic to see."
Player wise, who do you think will be the major improvers of 2021?
"I think all the second year players have improved drastically in the U17s grade, whilst the experienced campaigners in the Opens team have shown their experience and composure and will be a real asset to the team."
Which new players to the side do you think are worth keeping an eye on?
"I think as a collective we are a team that is building something special, it won’t happen straight away but Victor Harbor are certainly a team worth watching over the coming seasons."
What are you looking forward to the most this season?
"Just seeing the continued growth and development of women’s footy in the area."
