GSFLW Season Spotlight - Willunga
Claiming some big scalps during their push towards the 2020 Grand Final, Willunga will be looking to go one step further in 2021.
Finished - Second
Record - Five wins and two losses (minor round)
MWM GSFLW Team of the Year - Katrice Turner, Kristen Rothwell, Colbie Frankland, Caitlin Radbone, Ella Radbone, Carli Perryman
The Demons looked consistent throughout their 2020 campaign and were well-supplied by the likes of Katrice Turner, Carli Perryman, Kristen Rothwell and Ella Radbone. After finishing two games behind the ladder-leading Eagles, the Demons established themselves as a genuine premiership threat after knocking off McLaren in the finals--ending their seven game winning streak in the process.
However, Willunga would find themselves face to face with McLaren in the big dance, and this time it would end very differently. After a low scoring first term, the Eagles opened the flood gates and would lead by 50 points by the time the final siren would sound.
With abundance of young talent and a handy pick up from Aldinga, the Demons has their sights set on going one step more in 2021.
What Head Coach Wade Phillips has to Say:
How is the side looking for the new season?
"We have some great youth coming through to add to our experienced players so really looking forward to seeing how they develop. It’s been a long wait with some interruptions, so everyone is keen to get stuck into the season."
What would you say is going to be the biggest challenge of 2021?
"The unknowns of the other teams is always a challenge, new players etc. It makes for an exciting and even season, where anyone has a chance on any given day."
What are you looking to build on from the previous season?
"We have really been focusing on playing to our strengths and utilising our weapons more, so hopefully we can play an fun and exciting brand of footy."
Which players have impressed you the most during preseason?
"Jess Harris has been amazing as young player coming up, smashing her time trial times and looks ready for a big year. Jodie Hunt is another who has been around a while now but looks in top shape to attack 2021."
Player wise, who do you think will be the major improvers of 2021?
"If you mean from other clubs, I think overall every team will improve immensely . Another year of development can only be a great thing for everyone. I expect Mt Compass to be the club to beat. "
Which new players to the side do you think are worth keeping an eye on?
Shae Archbold has been a great addition to the club and while only young, has shown great potential and has fitted in seamlessly. While a little bit older, Sally Hams has been a breath of fresh air with her enthusiasm and bubbly personality so looking forward to seeing how both these girls go in 2021.
What are you looking forward to the most this season?
"I'm really looking forward to a more even season across the board, and with another year under everyone’s belts, a continued improvement of participation and skills across the competition. Can’t wait to get into it!."
