GSFLW Team of the Week - Round Four
Lest We Forget: this year’s ANZAC weekend was filled with high-scoring GSFLW clashes and impressive individual displays.
A dominant second term set Strathalbyn up for a huge 93-point win over Victor Harbor, 15.9 (99) to 1.0 (6). Leading by 21 points at the first break, the Roosters broke away from the Kangaroos with 4 second-term goals.
Indi Miller was the biggest story of this clash as she finished with 6 goals: Emma Chapman and Morgan Tucker were also among the Roosters’ best players. Aloura Kirk was rated as Victor Harbor’s best, while Jasmine Bailey continues to develop in the Kangaroos’ backline.
McLaren swooped on Yankalilla early to secure an 89-point win, 13.18 (96) to 1.1 (7). The Eagles registered 6 unanswered goals during the first half to seemingly put the win away early.
Unsurprisingly, Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg was labelled as the best afield after she booted 6 goals for the Eagles. Lauren Reynolds and Katie Whish were also among McLaren’s standouts. The performance of Kimberley Rowe, Yankalilla’s young product, was the Tigers’ main highlight from this clash.
Willunga further tightened their grip on the top spot after brushing aside Mt Compass by 80 points, 11.14 (80) to 0.0 (80). Similar to the weekend’s other results, the Demons' second-quarter efforts broke the game wide open as they registered 4 unanswered goals.
Willunga’s best players list from this match was as impressive as the result. Courtney Gutschmidt led the way with Best on Ground honours, while Lauren Buchanan and Tamara Page were also impressive. Mt Compass was well-supplied through their familiar performers of Demi Sharp and Kiara Upitis.

Captain: Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg
Vice-Captain: Indi Miller
Teams always want that player that can kick a big haul of goals. Sharing the spread of goals is nice, but there are fewer things that are as intimidating as a player who can kick a bag: and on the weekend, that player was Indi Miller. She earns the vice-captain title this week after kicking 6 goals during her Best on Ground display for Strathalbyn.
Strathalbyn didn’t have a sole standout forward but, in a sign of how the game went, they had 2 as Megan Rich added 5 goals to her season tally as well. Making it 11 between these 2 Roosters.
McLaren’s Lauren Reynolds made the most of the Eagles’ dominating win. Playing her part, and playing it very well, Reynolds finished with 2 goals to her name.
No attack is complete without those players who can play all around the ground; players like Willunga’s Lauren Buchanan (2 goals) and Courtney Gutschimdt (2 goals), who were standouts in the white and red.
There is one last Demon named up forward. The hard-running Tamara Page showed her SANFLW experience once again for Willunga, and she added another goal to her season-tally in the process.
Rucking duties belong to a standout from Strathalbyn’s big win, Emma Chapman. This Rooster made her presence felt throughout the match—which explains why they managed to record such a big win.
On-ball is the pride of Mt Compass, Demi Sharp. The reigning league Best and Fairest tried to do everything she could to spur the Bulldogs into action but to no avail: her efforts did, however, earn herself their Best on Ground title.
Rounding out the followers is Willunga’s ever-reliable performer, Katrice Turner. This experienced and talented inside-midfielder was once again one of the Demons’ best players afield.
Continuing the who’s who of GSFLW footy; the middle is home to McLaren’s Sophia Flanagan-Sjoberg. This crafty, silky, and fast-paced Eagle was a highlight of this weekend’s action, with Flanagan-Sjoberg earning her side’s Best on Ground honours after kicking 6 goals.
The wings are home to McLaren’s Katie Whish, who is fast-paced and SANFLW experienced, and Strathalbyn’s Katie Ehlers, who has continued her great start to this season.
Centre-half-back is home to Yankalilla’s Kimberley Rowe who, despite only being young, showed her class and composure against a fierce opposition forward line. This athletic tall still remains one of the league’s most underrated prospects.
Teagan Stewart was another Tiger who tried their best on the weekend despite the odds being stacked against the yellow and black.
Being a defender on the receiving end of a one-sided clash isn’t the most ideal experience: but Victor Harbor’s Jasmine Bailey made the most of it. This Kangaroo is quickly becoming a reliable performer for the blue and white.
Speaking of reliable performers, Kiara Upitis has continued her stellar start to the 2022 season. While the Bulldogs didn’t get their desired result, this talented utility can hold her head high.
Deep in defence is Liz Hayman who, much like Bailey, tried her best in the Kangaroo’s backline despite being matched against a much superior attack.
And rounding out this week's defence is Jodie Hunt, who finds herself behind the ball. This talented product managed to make herself stand out while playing in a star-studded Demons’ line-up.
Strathalbyn goalkicker, Rose Shaw, spearheads this week’s rotations. This Rooster enjoyed her weekend by not only increasing her season goal tally but she was also labelled as one of Strath’s best players of the weekend.
Brooke Archbold joins the rotations this week. Archbold was a standout for the Eagles, which is saying something considering the talent on their list.
Similarly, Jordan Bartolic, from McLaren, managed to make herself stand out during the Eagles' one-sided win. Bartolic celebrated the weekend’s big win with 2 goals as well.
From a rising GSFLW star to a current star: Strathalbyn’s Morgan Tucker continues to lead by example and her performance on the weekend was just another example of this.
Rounding out the MWM GSFLW Team of the Week are 2 players who simply played their roles well on the weekend: these are Ruby Thomas from Willunga and Aloura Kirk from Victor Harbor.
