GSFLW Team of the Week - Round Six

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

A week is a long time in football and following the one-sided matchups of Round Five – Round Six gave us plenty of close finishes between some of the league leaders.

It was a great weekend of footy, with three of the matches being decided by no more than ten points - with the only exception being the McLaren versus Victor Harbor game, in which the Eagles continued their unbeaten run with a comfortable 1.2 (8) to 11.8 (74) win.

With fourth spot on the line, Willunga managed to hold off Goolwa in a thrilling match while Strathalbyn were just able to escape Mt Compass after kicking 2.7 (19) to 2.3 (15).

Encounter Bay also joined the winners list for just the second time this season, after they just got over the top of Yankalilla, 2.5 (17) to 2.2 (14).

Scroll down to see this round's Team of the Week, plus a small breakdown of the squad.

Captain: Emogen Johnson

Vice-Captain: Layla Rogers

This round’s Team of the Week is the most well-represented yet with each club having at least two named players. Sitting with the biggest win of Round Six, McLaren also sits with the most named players with five, closely followed by Willunga with four. Then it is Goolwa, Encounter Bay, Strathalbyn, and Mt Compass with three named players each.

As for leaders this week, a familiar name from Strathalbyn continued her run of strong performances on the weekend which sees her gain this week’s Captaincy, which is of course young Emogen Johnson. The Vice-Captaincy goes to a first-year SANFLW player from McLaren, Layla Rogers.

Rogers was one of many McLaren players that got their name on the goal kickers list, the others being Brittnie Wyld (three goals), Alexandra Bentley (two goals) and Ester Rayner (two goals) -all three of which are named in this week’s forward line. The remaining spots up-forward go to an Encounter Bay duo of Achol Agany and Tj Walkden, as well as a Willunga player her equated for half of her side’s goals on the weekend, Kimberly Robinson.

This week’s followers remain relatively the same, with Willunga’s Ella Radbone being joined by this week’s Captain, Emogen Johnson as well as Goolwa’s Best on Ground, Renee Moon. The two wings are home to Mt Compass youngster, Brooke Boileau and Willunga’s Best on Ground, Caitlin Radbone - while Strathalbyn’s Tessa Grant calls the centre home.

Finding herself in her SANFLW position at half-back following her two-goal performance is this week’s Vice-Captain, Layla Rogers. Joining her is a familiar Willunga name in Katrice Turner, alongside Strathalbyn’s Roseanna Shaw. A young Victor Harbor duo of Maya Overall and Jaimee Millard also makes their return to our backline, while Yankalilla’s Tegan Cross rounds out this week’s defence.

The interchange is home to McLaren’s Tahlia Buethke, Encounter Bay’s Sherrie Hurrell, Goolwa’s Asha Bell, and Mt Compass’s Stacey Dale. While the remaining three spots in our Round Six GSFLW Team of the Week belong to Mt Compass’s Taylah Eastwood, Goolwa’s Michaela Hoppen, and Yankalilla’s Sophia Nicolis.
