GSFLW Team of the Week - Round Three

Willunga strengthen their hold on the top spot with a thumping win: while Mt Compass started fast and McLaren finished strong to each claim their Round Three wins.

Willunga solved last week’s debate as they brushed aside Strathalbyn by 91 points, 16.8 (104) to 2.1 (13). The results of Round Two had us wondering whether the original dynasty or a new one was emerging—and the Demons' one-sided win seems to point towards the latter option.

Willunga’s Emily Cooper and Stellar Remphrey-Pese combined for 10 goals, while Demon speedster Caitlin Radbone was also impressive. As for the Roosters, Indi Miller was a strong contributor and Katie Ehlers was their best afield.

A fast start by Mt Compass saw the Bulldogs defeat Yankalilla by 43 points, 10.6 (66) to 3.5 (23). Kicking 4 unanswered goals during the opening term, the Bulldogs were able to cruise to a convincing win.

Kiara Upitis was the story of this match. The usual defender/midfielder went up forward and kicked a game-high haul of 3 goals. Likewise, Emma Zimmerman was a standout for Mt Compass once again, while Demy Zahradnik and Mexie Marks did their best down back for Yankalilla.

McLaren finished strongly to defeat Goolwa by 20 points, 6.3 (39) to 3.1 (19). The Eagles, who led by a goal at the final break, booted 2 unanswered goals during the final term to secure the win.

The Eagles were well-supplied by their usual stars: Emily Rowe, Gwen Humphreys, and Donna Boal. Goolwa’s tall tandem of Luce Earl and Rachel Searle was impressive once again, while Kaya Angus was great around the ground.

Scroll down to see the Team of the Week, plus a small breakdown of the squad.

Captain: Emily Cooper

Vice-Captain: Kiara Upitis

FORWARDS:

Spearheading this week’s attack is the Round Three captain, Emily Cooper. The Willunga leader certainly led by example on the weekend as she kicked 6 of the Demons’ goals. Joining her is a fellow Demon forward, Stellar Remphrey-Pese, who booted 4 goals.

Continuing to show her wealth of SANFLW experience at Willunga is Lauren Buchanan, who was once again named amongst the Demons’ best players. Patty Parry, another Willunga leader, had a great influence on the red and white.

McLaren’s rising forward Bianca Coom makes an appearance this week after kicking 2 goals. Named in the opposite pocket is the Bulldogs’ Tyler Rigney-Garrett, who added another goal to her season total.

MIDFIELDERS/FOLLOWERS:

Rucking duties fall to Goolwa’s Rachel Searle, who seems to be in the process of backing up last year’s amazing season. This week Searle was the black and white’s Best on Ground.

Joining her on-ball is fellow Magpie Kaya Angus, who has stepped up majorly in the absence of Bell and Moon. Katrina Munzberg rounds out the on-ball brigade after being one of the Eagles’ better performers on the weekend.

The middle is home to this week’s vice-captain, Kiara Upitis. Upitis played amazingly on the weekend by kicking 3 goals in a performance that got her picked as the Bulldogs’ Best on Ground.

Caitlin Radbone, the hard-running wing/defender, makes an appearance this week after providing Willunga with plenty of outside pace. The other wing is home to the experienced McLaren midfielder, Gwen Humphreys.

DEFENDERS:

A duo of Yankalilla defenders joins this week’s team. Demy Zahradnik and Mexie Marks were the Tigers' first and second-best respectively—and both did their best against a relentless opposition offence.

Amy Vitkunas also finds herself behind the ball after being named as one of the Bulldogs’ best performers. Alongside her is McLaren’s Round Three Best on Ground, Emily Rowe.

Rowe is not the only Eagle down back this week as Donna Boal showed plenty of composure and leadership during McLaren’s hard-fought win on the weekend—which has earnt her an appearance.

As the third and final Eagle defender to make the side, talented rebounder Katie Whish rounds out this week’s defence.

INTERCHANGE/EMERGENCIES:

Joining the rotations as the second ruck this week is Goolwa’s Luce Earl. Backing up last week’s efforts, Earl was one of the Magpies' best afield and she also added a goal to her season tally.

Not letting an injury affect her performance, Willunga’s Cleo Guilfoyle showed her strength on the weekend by kicking 2 goals.

Katie Ehlers backed up last week’s good performance for Strathalbyn by being named as their Best on Ground this week. Similarly, Emma Zimmerman has continued her strong start to the season by being dubbed as one of the Bulldogs’ best.

Rounding out this week’s MWM GSFLW Team of the Week is Strathalbyn’s Indi Miller and Mt Compass’s Jasmin Gee.
