SANFLW Team of the Week - Round Eight

Round Eight of the SANFLW saw a dramatic end to the Norwood versus Sturt match, with a goal after the siren tying the scores in what was only the second ever draw in the competition.

The weekend also saw South Adelaide tighten their grip on second spot with a win over Glenelg, while North Adelaide made very easy work of the Eagles.

But perhaps the biggest talking point of Round Eight, is the fact that West Adelaide now sit three wins clear of fifth spot with two games left - meaning that the Bloods have locked in their first ever finals berth.

Of course, we have taken all the best performers from the weekend’s games, and put them into our SANFLW Team of the Week.

Scroll down to see the team sheet, plus a small breakdown of the named squad.

Coach: Krissie Steen Captain: Anne Hatchard Vice-Captain: Georgia Bevan

In one of the tightest battles we have had, especially for midfield spots – several of this round’s best players just missed the final cut, such as Shelby Smith and Abbie Ballard.

Out of those who remained, most were either West Adelaide or North Adelaide players, as both the Bloods and the Roosters hold five spots in this week’s side. Following them is South Adelaide and Glenelg with four apiece, then Sturt with three, Norwood with two, and finally the Eagles and Central District with one.

Due to the undefeated Roosters massive win, we have selected Krissie Steen as this round’s Team of the Week head coach. Likewise, we have selected star Crow, Anne Hatchard, as this week’s Captain. The Vice-Captaincy goes to Sturt’s Georgia Bevan who played a pivotal role in their draw with Norwood.

There were a lot of players vying for spots in the Team of the Week’s forward line, but it was hard to look past the West Adelaide duo of Stevie-Lee Thompson and Racheal Killian. Things seem to come in pairs for this week’s forward line, as Glenelg’s Eloise Jones and Madi Freeman, and North’s Lauren Daniel and Brianna Arthur, round out this week’s offense.

North Adelaide’s domination is felt in the midfield as well, with Katelyn Pope and this week’s Captain Anne Hatchard calling it home. Joining them on the wing is West Adelaide product Emma Smith.

South Adelaide find their strength in this week’s defense, with Lisa Whiteley and Lucy Northcott combining to form a formidable backline. Joining them is a rebounding expert in Maddi Newman, as well as Glenelg’s Ellie Kellock, Central’s Demi Sonneman, and Norwood’s Kate Fenton.

Zoe Prowse continues her run as our Team of the Week ruck, while joining her is this week’s Vice-Captain, Georgia Bevan, as well as South Adelaide’s athletic mid, Czenya Cavouras. Fellow Panther, Brianna Wedding, makes this week’s side as a second ruck, while North young gun Hannah Ewings continues her run in this week’s side. West Adelaide’s Zoe Venning also makes this week’s team and she was very unlucky not to be named as a starter, while Sturt’s Alex Ballard rounds out this week’s interchange.

Three very talented players find themselves as emergencies, with Norwood’s Rhiannon Busch, Glenelg’s Jessica Bates, and Eagles’ Zahn Anthony, all combined to fill this week’s very potent side.
